HAWA

About

Mohamed Alumna: A Franco-Iraqi, musician and poet, his career unfolds itself as a creative process based on a double articulation : Bringing the elsewhere to “here and now”, taking the “here and now” to the elsewhere.
Born in Kuwait in 1963 to an Iraqi family. Very early his interest goes not only to the musical colors of his native region, but also to the contemporary western music.

He arrives in Paris in 1980 and studies music theory at Ecole Nationale de Musique and improvisation at The American School of Modern Music. He gives his first concerts in duet and trio as a jazz guitarist. Some years after he rediscover the Oud and oriental singing as he goes back to his roots and forms several groups, in France “Pêcheurs de perles”, in Greece “Roubayyat”, in India and Turkey “Hawa”, in Spain “Andalusian wind”, in Israel- Palestine “Jalajil”, all with local and international musicians.

Hawa’s deep and colourful music is rooted in the artistic cultures and heritages of the Middle East and yet the branches of this musical tree reach up to various different parts of the world.

The music is mainly composed by iraqi composer, poet, singer and oud player Mohamed Alnuma, who as well has rearranged some traditional music in his own style.

Along with Oliver Dover’s clarinet and Raul Sengupta’s tabla
Hawa interweaves Indian rhythmic concepts with contemporary and traditional Arabic Music and Jazz. Hawa features poems of Sufi inspiration written by Mohamed Alnuma as well as poems by the Sufi poets Al Hallaj and Ibn Arabi.

Get taken on a journey of poetry and Middle Eastern sounds, celebrating connection, love, and life. It is a soulful exploration of rich traditions fused with global influences, creating music that transcends boundaries and brings people together.
